New Nook Color

Today Barnes and Noble announced their new Nook, the Nook Color. Being the proud owner of a Nook myself, I was both excited and worried about this announcement. I got my Nook last Christmas and a year really isn't long enough to own something like that before you decide to trade it in. Unfortunately, I was right to worry. I'll be waiting to read some hands-on reviews before I decide for sure, but I really really want one! Here's a run-down on my favorite things about the Nook Color.

1. Giant color touch screen
2. More options for organizing and customizing your books
3. Only $249. Now, I know that's still a lot of money, but compared to an iPad it's pretty darn good.
4. The store now recommends books to you, something I've really wanted
5. You can share books, notes, and even favorite lines directly to facebook and twitter! Awesome feature!
6. Sudoku, Crossword Puzzles, and Pandora Radio!
7. A web browser that is (supposedly) fast and easy to use.
8. Full color magazine subscriptions
9. Interactive kids' books- I like the direction they're going in here.
10. They've released tools for anyone to develop Android apps for it.
11. Comes with 8G! Also, an SD slot! Basically, more room than you will EVER need for books.

Things I'm Not So Sure About
1. That keychain-hole/ cutout in the corner. Who needs a lanyard for an ebook reader?
2. Eight hour battery time isn't amazing. My old Nook runs for about a week before it needs to charge.
3. Even with the new ones, there's a shortage of cool Nook cases.

It looks like I'll be waiting to read a few reviews before I commit, but (barring a crappy battery life, hopelessly slow browser, or other fatal flaw) I'll probably be trading in my old Nook this Christmas. I may even do a giveaway for it, seeing as how all the readers in my life already have ebook readers.

What do you think of the new nook? Too much razzmatazz for an ereader? Best thing ever? Let me know! :)

I'd heard about this and didn't really think I would want one because I already have my own wonderful NOOK, but the fact that the color screen is a TOUCH SCREEN makes a big difference to me. That's all I have to hear! But I still don't think I'll go for one until mine dies. :)

It's funny you should say that. I only got a Nook because my Sony PRS700's screen cracked right before christmas last year and they discontinued that model. (The backlight was a big reason I went with Sony and they got rid of it.)

I love the little handle at the bottom.

There is no need for a little handle! It just makes the whole thing look off-balance.
Silly bear, Everything is better with a handle! =)
You'll understand when you evolve some opposable thumbs.
If I had any money, I'd be torn over the whole eBook reader/tablet dilemma. But if the Nook Color has a Web browser and can do apps, does that make it a good alternative to a full-blown tablet?
I can't read books on a tablet. My brother got a Nook Color and the screen isn't nearly as readable as eInk. I can't forget that it's a screen and get lost in the book the way I can with eInk, so I'd defnitely go for an ebook reader if you want it for books. The Nook Color is a great alternative to a full tablet, as long as it does what you want it to. I wanted one to read comics on and I've found that the NC is just too small. I'd have to zoom in on the text and that disrupts the whole flow of the page. I just got an Asus Transformer and so far I'm in love. It's okay for ebooks in a pinch, but I still do most of my reading on my Nook. For comics, it is AMAZING. I use it for everything but typing up documents now, and I'll probably use it for that once I get the keyboard. If you're looking for something to replace your desktop, I'd go with a full tablet. However, if you're just looking for something to carry around the house to browse the internet/use as a cookbook/ read magazines on, the Nook Color is a great option.
